In praise of carrying a compass
I love making soup on a day like this. There is something so cozy about such good smells simmering away when the day is so dreary outside. Soup is one of the few foods around that lends itself well to the fly by the seat of your pants approach. Its a great way to clean the fridge and to use up all those little bits of things in the cupboard that aren't nearly enough to stand on their own.
Not like baking for sure. To the casual observer it might not look like I'm using a recipe ... but that's only because the recipes for bread/ brownies/ biscuits are such familiar friends they are committed to memory.
Rather like the recipe for No Kill, eh? Its not a new concept anymore, so the No Kill Equation is not an unproven theory .. it is a tried and true recipe now. They have discovered that it IS possible to adopt the way to No Kill. Straight, sweet and simple.
So how DID that offsite adoption event work for CAPS? Well I was just updating the CAPS Cat Gallery on the site and there were fifteen kittens and cats that have found their furever homes! And a little birdie told me that another one is going home tonight ... with the promise of more to come!
The Greenwood Mall loved the whole idea so much that CAPS has been invited back. Why wouldn't they love it? People just love to go anywhere that they can meet animals, especially the purrfectly lovely ( and calm and quiet) kitties. The adoption event attracted quite a crowd to a mall that is in desperate need of more foot traffic.
Even better, now there can be a better outcome for more cats in Annapolis Animal Control as CAPS had room to take more in!
Win win all around, eh?
Will CAPS be going back to the mall? You bet! Plans are already afoot for another event in April if I am not mistaken.
What time is it? Its always time to celebrate success!

In praise of enthusiasm
I love being able to do up my seed orders online. Its comfy and easy. Being able to check the totals as I go along is a great reminder not to bite off more than I can chew. Best of all, I know immediately if seeds aren't in stock and so can tweak the other orders accordingly. THAT isn't just convenient ... it can save the extra shipping and/ or handling charges down the road.
I'm a middle aged grandmother ... so I tend to treat the net like a teenager. Its interesting to watch it develop. If you ask the right questions you can find the information you are looking for. But you still have to be careful what you 'tell' it if you wish to keep a measure of personal privacy :)
That being said, its lovely to see the net blossom in so many great ways for the animals. From share buttons on Petfinder and websites right through to twittering for the animals ... social networking is changing outcomes for both owned and homeless pets.
One of the neatest things I've seen yet is the fairly new Nova Scotia Lost Dog Network. What a brilliant idea! Its beauty lays in the simplicity of sharing lost dog listings around facebook.
How does it work? Do the group admins passively wait for lost dog listings? No sir! They comb the ads in Kijiji and contact the owners to offer to help.
And it doesn't stop there ... they have fundraised for large traps and crates for transport. Created posters for dog owners to print and put up everywhere.
Even better, it provides a central place for sightings to be listed and searches to be coordinated.
Best of all, it has been such a success that similar groups have already been created in BC and beyond!
Now they are building a wonderful website to reach out to all those folks who might never see the light of Facebook Day.
Does that mean that all the lost dogs listed on the group are found? Of course not! The group provides the resources to help the owners ... but if the owners don't print the posters/ share the information with their friends / etc, odds are less on the side of success, eh?
What time is it? It is always time to applaud a great idea like this, using social networking in such a proactive way to help owned pets find their way back home.

SHAID is celebrating their 25th Anniversary!
I'm one of those sentimental sorts who loves to mark all the special days and occasions of all sizes. Why? Because if I have learned one thing in fifty six years it is that there it generally takes a lot of love, energy and commitment to get to each milestone.
SHAID turns 25 this week ... and today to celebrate the shelter will be open until seven. There will be cake ... the spiffy SHAID T Shirts will be on sale ... and best of all of course is the chance to meet their adorable adoptable pets :)
If today doesn't work for you, I do believe you can still catch all the fun tomorrow. The shelter will be open for its usual Wednesday hours, from 12 - 3 pm.
I'm betting that if the animals had a chance to blow out the candles on the cake, their paws would all be crossed that cake might lure in the kindred spirit they have been waiting for :)
I'll freely admit to having a special affection for SHAID. My own little mighty mini Morgan might not have lived to tell the tail had she been rescued by a different group. ( if you are unfamiliar with Morgan's story, the short version is that she was a teenage mommy who had been so badly hurt that she couldn't walk. Instead of assuming an Unhappy Tail was the only option, SHAID gave her the time she needed to get back on her paws )
Every morning when she kisses me on the nose to "check" if I'm awake .... every time she is waiting at the door to greet me .... everytime she gallops along with that funny little hitch to her gait ... I am grateful she was rescued by a genuine No Kill Shelter.
If you want to see the sweet faces who will be there today, scroll down. If you want more information about any of them, click here.
If you need directions to the shelter, click here.
I know I say it all the time on the homeless pet sites, but it really is true that while adopting one homeless pet will not change the whole world, it will change the whole world for that one homeless pet. And for you too, ya know?
What time is it? Its always time to celebrate the hard work behind the success :)

A little monday morning cat(ch) up
There is a heart shaped sign in my kitchen ... ( ironically from Wheatons aka Home of the Happy Housewife ) that reads "all work and no play makes a housewife. That being said, even laid back empty nesters like myself still need to do the odd occasional domestic bits to keep the home fires burning in a harmonious and healthy fashion.
I am my father's daughter ... and that means that its a constant struggle not to unleash my inner packrat. To be perfectly honest, if I hadn't had the wake up call of having to close up my parents' home, it would be much harder to stay on a sensible path.
But I did ... and so every year at this time, before I get busy in the garden .... it has become an annual ritual to "weed" the house in readiness for spring. Gone are the boxes of old magazines, the years of old cards and all the things that still fit but are years out of style. The beautiful high heels my fallen arches will never see again. The novels that will not be worth a second read.
If I do this every year, why are there still things to tackle? Because I AM my father's daughter, eh? What if I might need that someday, eh?
That is how the entire top shelf of the rather large spare bedroom closet is stacked to the brim with pictures.Family pictures. Framed finger paintings. Lovely sketches and paintings in frames needing repair.
Does that mean that there is nothing hanging on the walls right now? Of course not! But the goal is to get the family pics into two albums and get the little paintings into the best frames and up on the wall. The broken frames will become kindling and the good ones will be given away.
Every now and then, I rummage through the blog to see if there are stories that need updating too:

- Do you remember the offsite adoption event that CAPS had at the Greenwood Mall? Did they have any luck? You bet. Within two weeks, several of the cats were adopted. Sponsorships have picked up. CAPS is so pleased with the success that plans are already in the works for another one:) Sheesh .. if they did nothing else but get the good word out about their BOGO program it would have been time well spent.
- Last week I talked about Little Golden ... and the fact that ARC was fundraising for his eye surgery. He has had surgery on one eye and that has gone well, so very soon he will be going back to get the surgery on the second eye. Did I mention how much respect I have for groups that never define "healthy and treatable" by the dollar sign? There was never any question of him NOT getting the surgery ... as ARC's president said we will just get out and fundraise for it. Click here if you want to help with that
- There is some sad news along with the good about the senior dog who needed a safe berth. For the kind hearts at Atlantic Small Dog Rescue, size never matters and they had agreed to tuck him under their paw. Sadly this good dog went into medical failure ... very likely prompted by the grief of losing his beloved human :(
- The miracle cat, Rolo, is still waiting for his Happy Tail at the the Clarenville SPCA
- Sadly it is no surprise that there is no sign of any Anti Tethering campaign here in NS like the existing one Newfoundland SPCA initiated quite some time ago. Even though the law hasn't been passed (yet) at least the public in Newfoundland can see this is NOT a humane practice and that their SPCA is publicly opposed to it. The Nfld SPCA knows that papers and position statements aren't worth the white paper they are written on because the type of people who chain and pen dogs are not likely to visit their website, eh?
- Happily, Maggie is settling in beautifully and in her wonderful new life will be able to help her amazing Mom spread the joys of responsible pet ownership:)

An Incredible email from PET Projects
Like everyone else, I get a lot of garbage in my email. Sadly, in some instances the authors have clearly spent no small amount of time and energy to craft their rebuttals to my blog. I read the polite ones, but this schoolmarm's daughter quickly hits the delete button for bad spelling / grammar and/ or rudeness.
That just makes my day anytime, and offsets some of the more difficult things that come into my inbox.
But this email from PET Projects really takes the cake! I try not to play favourites, but its hard not to have a soft spot for such a well respected group that is always thinking outside of the box for the animals.
They don't just talk the talk. From off site adoptions ... to providing emergency assistance to help people keep their own pets ... right through to providing proactive help to kind hearts trying to help cats ... and everything in between ... they are as close to "full service" as it gets in this province.
How do they do it? By engaging the community is how! They know that a shelter cannot survive as a separate entity. That success is only partly measured by statistics. Like the proverbial village .... they understand that it takes a community to create better outcomes for both owned and homeless pets.
How do they do that? By engaging the politicians who represent them at all levels. By working with the business community. By involving the community college.
In other words ... by reaching out to all facets of the community!
So it should really have been no surprise to find the following email from Shelly Hipson ( the subject of how Shelly is such a one woman dynamo she would never have time to sit still for a hero cookie is a really neat one that would make a great book someday, eh? )
How cool is this ? I don't know if this is a new feature that Petfinder is offering for its members, or if this is just something very cool that Shelly figured out on her own ... but scroll down and have a look.
Even cooler ... although it didn't come through when I forwarded to this blog post, the original email had two buttons beside every listing ... one to 'print this pet' and one 'back to list'
Best of all, this email didn't just come to me. No sir! It was sent out to the very large list of animal lovers associated with PET Projects.
What time is it? In this convenience based world, where everyone is always looking to take the easy road, it is Always a great idea to find ways to make access to pet adoption easier for kind hearts.
No problem can be solved by the same consciousness that created it. We need to see the world anew. Albert Einstein
Cats Looking for Love and a Family!
(scroll down to see our cats needing a soft place to call home)
You've finally made the decision to adopt a cat, you've dreamt about it for quite some time. Visualising your cute new little kitten playing around the floor and looking up at you with those big baby blues. What could possibly go wrong, after all it's only a tiny kitten. But have your really thought about how much time, effort and trouble a kitten really is. A kitten is packed full of energy and curiosity and will cry for attention, scratch the furniture, bite and urinate everywhere until it is litter box trained, and will run around the house getting into all sorts of scrapes and trouble. And it's up to you to look after them 24/7. If you've got the time and dedication to look after a kitten, great, but if not, why not think about adopting an adult cat?
Most adult cats have found themselves in animal shelters from no fault of their own. They may have out lived their owner, their owners may have moved and left them behind, become lost or someone in the family may have become allergic to them. The reasons are far to numerous to list them all. The cats themselves are perfectly healthy animals, bristling with fun and energy and simply looking for a caring loving home.
Older cat has already developed its personality so you will know what kind of pet they will be and whether or not they will suit your family. Adult cats are much calmer and more likely to want to spend some quiet time sitting on your lap for strokes and purring. Studies have shown that cats can have a real health benefit for humans in reducing their stress levels and blood pressure.
It can be a very rewarding experience to adopt an older cat, not only because of the pleasure they will give you over the years but also in the knowledge that you have provided a loving home for what was probably a very frightened and confused cat, who had no idea why he had lost his family.

He loves to be rubbed and played with, he's not a lap cat yet but will most definitely become one in time. He is very gentle with his claws when playing, and does not bite. Timid and Shy! Give us a Try! Domestic Short Hair-black and white Cat Status: Adoptable Size: M Age: Young Gender: M 17997144 This pet is: altered Notes: Louie, Daisy and Dewie were all spayed/neutered on December 7, 2010. They came into our care awhile back, but had little human contact up till then. They were rescued from a cat colony with many hungry, cold, and scared kitties. While currently being fostered in a home with many cats, they have not taken to cuddling or sharing affection. So while these 3 would need a lot of tenderness, attention, and time to make a good pet, if tamed, their loyalty will go unsurpassed. While a patient human would be the ideal adopter for Louie, Daisy, and Dewie, PET Projects will consider adopting them into a safe farm environment, with a loving down-to-earth family. All three kitties can be considered for "barn cats" with the garauntee of a warm place to sleep, lots of food, and ample mice hunting.
